Not only a Gothic novel but also an intriguing detective storu and a forerunner of science fiction. Stevenson's description of a respectable man who tries to escape of a respectable man who tries to escape his moral duties leads the reader to analyse dualism in Victorian society and inside the human soul, torn between its two extremes in the eternal fight between good and evil.
